One of the most eye-opening lessons I’ve learned at Ambokili Farm is the power of organic farming. Before, the kales we grew at home had a bitter taste, but since we switched to organic methods, that bitterness has disappeared.

Common questions

Before you reach out

Can’t find your answer below? Email us at office@ambokili.farm. We’re straightforward and reply quickly.

Do I need farming experience to volunteer?

Not at all. Ambokili regularly hosts people with no agricultural background — students, professionals, and travellers. We’ll teach you what you need to know. The most important thing is that you’re willing to work outdoors in warm conditions and genuinely curious about the land.

How long should I plan to stay?

Volunteers are welcome for a minimum of one week. Two to four weeks is the most common stay. Interns typically commit to 4–12 weeks for a structured learning experience. There is no fixed maximum — some people have stayed much longer when the fit is right.

Is accommmodation available on the farm?

Basic on-farm accommodation is available for volunteers and interns by prior arrangement. We ask for a modest daily contribution toward food and facilities. Nearby accommodation in Kimana town is also available. We’ll give you full practical details when we confirm your placement.

What languages do you work in?

English is the primary working language at Ambokili. Swahili is the community language around the farm. A basic knowledge of Swahili is helpful but not required — you’ll pick up the essentials quickly.

Is Ambokili accepting research partnerships?

Yes. We are actively interested in research collaborations, particularly with institutions working on semi-arid agroecology, land restoration, indigenous knowledge systems, or community development in East Africa. Reach out with a brief description of your project and institution and we’ll respond promptly.

Can I visit the farm without commiting to a placement?

Yes. Educational day visits and guided farm tours are available for individuals and groups. If you’re traveling through the Amboseli area and want to see the farm, get in touch. Many longer-term volunteers started with a single day visit.

Ready to visit the land?

Come and walk the farm for yourself. See three years of documented restoration from barren gullies to living, productive ecosystem. Educational visits, farm stays, and tours are all available by arrangement.
